PER ORLANDO (2026)
For Solo Piano
Duration: Flexible / Open (~10–12 minutes)
Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced (Focus on dynamic control, spatial pacing, and delicate touch)
PER ORLANDO is a three-movement suite for solo piano conceived as a quiet, functional sonic environment. Written for the newborn child of musicians Francesco Zago and Elena Talarico (Kubin Duo), the cycle explores extreme quietude, open temporal structures, and the intersection between indeterminate process and meditative focus.
Drawing on the spatial notation of John Cage, the unmetered, barline-free prose of Erik Satie, and the ambient, generative principles of Brian Eno, the suite functions both as a cohesive performance work and an exploration of dynamic restraint—never exceeding a pianissimo threshold.
Movements & Compositional Framework
I. Musica per fare sogni d'oro
Utilizes complete spatial notation, leaving event durations and breath flexible to the performer and acoustics of the space. The music operates strictly within micro-dynamics (pp to ppp), focusing entirely on decay, silence, and resonance.
II. Musica da ascoltare in braccia: Ancora un omaggio a Erik Satie
Sharing similarities Satie’s Gnossiennes. Stripped of barlines and rigid metric hierarchy, the movement balances modal, atmospheric gestures with subtle harmonic suspension.
III. Musica per la nanna
A process-driven movement structured through aleatoric operations. A single six-note core gesture is subjected to 108 die rolls that dictate rhythmic density, structural truncation, and variable spacing. The result is a non-repeating, mantra-like texture that mimics the organic, unpredictable timing of a wind chime.
